ER staff, police officers, paramedics, firefighters, dispatchers are all first responders. The job rewires people,
and the things it asks you to compartmentalize don't always stay compartmentalized.
If you're here, you probably already know what's not working. That could be the hypervigilance that
doesn't turn off when you're home, the sleep that won't come, or won't stay., the
drinking, distance from your partner, or that one disturbing image you can't let go of.
EMDR is one of the better-suited modalities for the kind of accumulated and acute trauma exposure that comes with the job, for a few reasons:
I'm a private-pay-friendly practice for first responders, which means we can keep your
therapy off your department insurance entirely if that's what you want. This means no diagnosis on
file with your employer, no notes anywhere they can be subpoenaed in the ordinary
course. (I'll explain the actual limits of confidentiality in our consultation — there are
some, and I'll be straightforward about them).
